Sunlight has been used for centuries to treat skin diseases, with ancient Egyptians using a psoralen-based substance combined with sunlight to treat vitiligo. Ultraviolet (UV) light reduces immune system activity in the skin. In recent years, alternative UV sources have been developed for controlled treatment, eliminating the need for natural sunlight.
Phototherapy treats chronic skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, PLE, and vitiligo, offering a safe solution for large or resistant areas. Our flexible hand/foot unit allows targeted treatment. Phototherapy typically requires 2-3 clinic visits per week for 3-4 months, with possible maintenance therapy based on your response
Used for more than 75 years to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis, this therapy works by exposing the skin to a type of ultraviolet (UV) light called UVB. The UVB light penetrates the skin, and this slows the growth of the skin cells that lead to these specific skin conditions. UVB light therapy treatment is excellent in controlling psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema and PLE (polymorphic light eruption) or Prickly Heat.
The word ‘PUVA’ comes from combining the words ‘psoralen’ and ‘UVA’ Psoralen is a medicine that makes the skin more sensitive to UVA light. Using psoralen before exposure to a UVA light source can be very effective for clearing a range of skin conditions including psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, PLE (polymorphic light eruption) / Prickly Heat and other skin conditions.
